Art Art History

An Odyssey in Greece

An Odyssey in Greece
Student Gallery 111
March 24-31, 2023

From the bustling streets of Thessaloniki to the spectacular lonely beauty of Mt. Parnassus, from the impressive architecture of the ancient theater at Epidaurus to the street art that permeates the neighborhoods of Athens, nineteen intrepid TCNJ students lived the experience of Greek history and culture for 21 days during the 2023 Winter Session. While studying the monuments and material culture of various eras of Greek history, the students also immersed themselves in the life, light, sounds, food, and surroundings of present-day Greece on a TCNJ study abroad program led by Professors Lee Ann Riccardi and Elizabeth Mackie. For their final project, students were tasked with documenting their experiences as they traveled throughout the country photographing what they saw and observed.

Working with their professors, each student chose a particular focus that would allow them to closely observe and thoughtfully analyze some aspect of Greek life and culture. Unusually mild January weather made it possible to spend much of every day outside and enhanced the quality of the photographs the students took, allowing them to play with sunlight as well as shadow. This exhibition represents the culmination of their unique perspectives on the topics they chose. It shows some of the variety they experienced through their travels and serves as starting point for further reflection about cultural differences and our shared humanity.
