What Images
Curated by Lindsey Arturo and Kaitlyn Paston
March 12- April 5, 2026
Opening Performance: Thursday, March 12, 2026, 7:30pm with reception to follow
What happens when images fail to hold meaning?
What is left and what are we looking at?
Are images helping us see?
Are images just for looking at?
How can I view these images, and who is allowing me to see?
See what?
What happens after you see?
What do I want from an image?
Why am I making an image?
The works in this exhibition are artists’ personal responses to their own crisis with images or their image making process. The value in reaching a breaking point is that it can generate new ways of making sense. Think beyond the crisis rather than restore the function of a system in failure.
The artists in this exhibition reflect on various conundrums including the shame-inducing expectations of commercial images, the value preserved in the Hollywood image with its sneaky intimacy, the development of a climate controlled viewing experience for cinematic images, adventures into the history of painted images within contemporary modes of viewing, narrative human bodies presenting reality, disassociation from the natural world, image obsession and fatigue, and dispersion of control in order to make room for chance, confusion, and wonder.
Exhibition artists include: Layan Attari, Lindsey Arturo, Adi Blaustein Rejto, Patrick Glennon, Arghavan Heydareseslam, Sidian Liu, Kaitlyn Paston, Chrystine Rayburn, Amanda Teixeira, and Helen Wilson.
Please note: The TCNJ Art Gallery will be closed March 15 – 22 for Spring Break.
