TCNJ Second Statewide K-12 Exhibition on View June 1-22

For the second year in a row, TCNJ is recognizing exemplary artwork created by New Jersey’s K-12 students, and showcasing innovative lessons designed by the state’s talented art teachers. The exhibition, titled Art, Innovation, and Ideas, is on view in TCNJ’s Art Gallery from June 1 through June 22, with a special reception on Sunday, June 8, from 1:00 to 3:00. The statewide exhibition celebrates innovative art making that connects student learning and art to the real world, academic subjects, social issues, big ideas, and contemporary art.

Once again this year, TCNJ received hundreds of submissions from art teachers in elementary, middle, and high schools throughout New Jersey. The 124 works selected for the show represent students from schools in 19 of the 21 counties in the state, as well as Trenton, Newark, and Camden. Student work in the exhibition includes all media—painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, ceramics, textiles, metalwork, digital imaging, and video.

A group of five talented and experienced art educators and artists served as jurors for the exhibition, including Faith Ringgold, Frank Bardachino, Aylin Green, Rebecca Mitchell, and Carol Sterling. (Bios for the jurors can be found here.) The review of artwork was based on many criteria, including student creativity, concept behind the work, ability to communicate an important message, story, or thought, and innovation. Preference was given to artworks that challenge the traditional boundaries of the visual arts in K-12 schools.

TCNJ’s Art Gallery presents six exhibitions each year, and all exhibitions and program are free and open to the public. The College’s Department of Art and Art History includes programs in visual art (fine art, graphic design, lens-based photo and video), art history, and art education. Special Art Gallery hours for the K-12 exhibition will be Sundays and Wednesdays from 1:00 to 3:00 and by appointment for groups and school visits.
