Leading Scholar of Children’s Book Illustration to Speak October 22

On Wednesday, October 22, at 4:00 p.m., Dr. Nick Clark, from the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, will speak about Innovation and Appropriation in 20th-Century Picture Book Art. His lecture, which will be held in the Art and Interactive Multimedia (AIMM) Building, Room 125, will be presented immediately prior to the opening of the Art Gallery exhibition Visual Voyage: Exploring the Media and Styles of Award-Winning Children’s Book Illustrators at 5:00 p.m. Among the 56 works of art in the exhibition are 15 book illustrations loaned by the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Nick Clark assumed the position of Founding Director of The Eric Carle Museum in 2001, and in 2008 he shifted his responsibilities to become Chief Curator. Previously, he served as Chair of Education at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and Curator of American Art at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia. While at the Chrysler, he was co-curator with Michael Patrick Hearn and Trinkett Clark of the exhibition Myth, Magic, and Mystery: One Hundred Years of American Children’s Book Illustration, which resulted in a major publication of the same title. Clark received his B.A. cum laude from Harvard University and his M.A. and Ph. D. in Art History from the University of Delaware.

The lecture and exhibition are free and open to the public.
