Five Public Programs Examine “Art Amongst War: Visual Culture in Afghanistan, 1979-2014”

 

In conjunction with the exhibition Art Amongst War: Visual Culture in Afghanistan, 1979-2014, the Art Gallery and Department of Art and Art History are pleased to present a series of five public programs and discussions.

 

March 5, 2014, “Beyond the Images on the Evening News: Afghanistan’s Visual Culture in Context,” lecture by Dr. Deborah Hutton, Associate Professor of Art History and Exhibition Curator, 4:00 p.m., AIMM Building, Room 125

Dr. Hutton will discuss the historical, cultural, and religious contexts behind Afghan visual culture, and she will present themes and issues to consider when viewing objects. Her lecture will be followed by a Q&A and the exhibition opening.

 

March 19, 2014, “History of Histories, Afghan Films, 1960-Present,” presented by artist Mariam Ghani, 6:30 p.m., Library Auditorium

Ghani will screen “History of Histories,” a compilation of fiction films, newsreels, and documentaries from Afghanistan’s national film archive, which together profoundly document the nation’s recent history. The screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A led by TCNJ Professor Jo-Ann Gross

 

March 26, 2014, “Kandahar Treasure: Empowering Afghan Women One Stitch at a Time,” lecture by Rangina Hamidi, activist and founder of Kandahar Treasure
5:30 p.m., Library Auditorium

Hamidi will discuss the mission, history, challenges, and success of Kandahar Treasure, an enterprise founded by Hamidi to empower Afghan women by reviving traditional embroidery techniques and developing economic sustainability. Her presentation will be followed by a discussion and Q&A led by TCNJ Professor Marla Jaksch.

 

April 2, 2014, “Combat Paper: Creating a New Language for US Veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq,” presented by artist and veteran David Keefe, 5:30 p.m., AIMM Building, Room 125

Keefe will discuss the mission and activities of Combat Paper, which assists NJ soldiers in the difficult transition from battlefield to home. The project helps vets tell their stories through a unique paper and print making process. His presentation will include a discussion and Q&A led by TCNJ Professor Gregory Thielker.

 

April 9, 2014
“Skateistan: Using Skateboarding to Empower the Youth of Afghanistan,” presented by Skateistan Advisory Board Member Benafsha Tasmim, 5:30 p.m., Library Auditorium

Tasmim will screen a short documentary about Skateistan and talk about the mission and stories of this NGO based in Kabul, which empowers Afghan girls and boys by teaching them to skateboard. Her presentation will include a discussion and Q&A led by TCNJ Professor Marla Jaksch.
