Ruane Miller Exhibition On View Through February 20

Through the Window of My Mind . . . Ruane Miller, Paintings & Prints will be on view in the Art Gallery from January 23 through February 20. This retrospective exhibition of forty-six works of art created during the past fifteen years, is presented on the occasion of Miller’s retirement as Professor of Digital Art at TCNJ, where she has taught since 1986.

The paintings and prints on exhibit in Through the Window of My Mind include several series of works created during Miller’s art residencies in the Southwest. Travel and immersion in different environments are integral to the development of her imagery. She has spent time in Maui, northwestern Ontario, the Northern Plains, and the Four Corner Region of the Southwest. She has returned to the Southwest regularly and continues to pursue her interest in its ancient and contemporary cultures, their art, artifacts, and beliefs and the landscape of the region. Her work in the field has informed and enhanced her understanding of the impact of the natural environment on our sensibilities.

Miller creates using both traditional painting and drawing media and digital imaging and printmaking. The digital work incorporates her photography of landscapes, wildflowers, and ancient art as well as scans of gouache paintings and sketches. She often works in series; the body of work expressive of a particular time and place and developed in what is a cross feeding of the two media. She moves comfortably between the digital and traditional often blending the two in to create a desired effect.

During her tenure at TCNJ, Miller designed and implemented the development of a computer graphics curriculum and facility for the Art Department and later coordinated the development of a BFA major in Digital Arts. She served as Chairperson of the Art Department and Coordinator of both the Fine Arts and Digital Arts programs. Miller received a MFA degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY (Computer Graphics Design), a MFA degree Tyler School of Art, Rome, Italy (Painting/Printmaking) and a BFA degree from Tyler in Philadelphia. She has taught on the college level since 1977 at colleges and universities including UCLA and SUNY Albany in the areas of Digital Arts, Fine Arts, and Art History.

Miller has exhibited extensively in national and international exhibits. Her work is in numerous public and private collections including the print collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Art, San Francisco; the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions at Rutgers University; the PNC Bank Fine Art Collection; The Cultural Institute of Rome; the Cultural Attaché Offices, US Embassy, Rome; the Mercer County Cultural Commission Permanent Collection; the National Park Service Fine Art Collection. She has been awarded competitive artist residency fellowships by the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming, by the Vermont Studio Center’s Geraldine R. Dodge Awards and by both the Grand Canyon National Park and the Petrified Forest National Park Artist Residency Programs in Arizona and she has received numerous Faculty Research Awards from The College of New Jersey.
