Steve Lambert: Capitalism Works For Me! True/False

TCNJ Art Gallery

Sept 9 – Nov 3, 2020

Opening Day Artist Talk Wednesday, Sept 9, 4:00-5:00; reception to follow

Steve Lambert’s monumentally-scaled, interactive artwork will be the centerpiece of the exhibition, Steve Lambert’s Capitalism Works For Me, opening on September 9, 2020. Measuring 20’ long and nearly 9’ tall, Capitalism Works For Me! True/False consists of a light-up sign with the word “CAPITALISM” in light-up letters, with a scoreboard below reading “Works For Me!”. Visitors punch a big green (TRUE) or red (FALSE) button and their response is tallied on a digital scoreboard.  By asking a question that seems, at first glance, to be very simple, Lambert leads visitors to consider their own lived experience, and, in turn, more complex questions about our economic system, our ideas about what is fair and just, and the real-life benefits and costs of this system. During the exhibition, student guides, trained by Lambert, will engage visitors in guided conversations inspired by the sign. Through the conversations that it inspires, Capitalism Works For Me! True/False will engage visitors in a more nuanced and personal consideration of our capitalist system and the possibilities for making a more examined world
