A garment adorned with a handmade patch can tell a story, express your personality, and extend the life of items in your closet. In this art patch workshop, participants will build skills and confidence in hand stitching and appliqué—the technique of layering textiles to form images and patterns. Philadelphia-based artist Julie Woodard will introduce essential tools, demonstrate techniques, and share how textile repair and reuse play a role in her broader visual art practice.

Each participant will leave with a one-of-a-kind art patch that can later be used to mend or embellish a favorite garment. Basic hand-sewing experience is helpful but not required. Participants are encouraged to bring fabric scraps or other materials they’d like to incorporate, such as ribbons, buttons, or beads. Much of Julie’s textile work involves repurposing materials connected to personal histories or discovered in meaningful places, and attendees are welcome to bring textiles from home that hold significance for them. As we stitch, we’ll exchange stories and ideas, making the process as meaningful as the finished piece.

About the Artist:

Using salvaged textiles, found objects, pigments and thread, artist Julie Woodard creates impressionistic landscapes, multimedia installations, functional sculptures, and wearable pieces that convey her passion for nature, memory, and creative reuse. Current incarnations pay tribute to her late mom and repurpose family heirlooms, as well as feature vintage goods, cutting room remnants, broken furniture, and street debris.

Julie’s artistic practice incorporates elements of animation, applique, ceramics, collage, embroidery, quilting, painting, printmaking, songwriting, and sculpture. Every piece has a story. Every material is repurposed with purpose. Learn more at www.juiceboxworkshop.com and @juiceboxworkshop on Instagram and Facebook.
