In today’s digital age of selfies, Instagram, and Snapchat, what does photography mean to teenagers? After a visit to TCNJ’s Art Gallery to experience the exhibition, An Unfixed Image: The Photographic Across Media, Trenton Central High School students have created their own artworks exploring what photography means today. Their artworks will be exhibited at TCNJ’s TrentonWorks Gallery, located at 5 South Broad Street in Trenton, from April 20 to May 2, 2015. The opening reception for the Trenton Central High School students’ exhibition is Thursday, April 23, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Student artists in the exhibition include: Tantyanna Barnwell, Alexis Burgos, Najah Davis, Karla Godoy, Ambar Gomez, Alahni Gunn, Jayda Hinds, Camille James, Lue Kwieta, Ashley Leon, Astra Martinez, Khietharelys Medina, Tahis Molina, Stacy Monge. Austin Nyanneh, Khee Lar Paw, Karelys Pincay. Anaja Pyles, Ariana Rolon, Miracle Santiago, Zoe Singleton, Jaylin Villanueva, Helen Williams, and Sierra Winder.
The exhibition An Unfixed Image features works by nine contemporary artists who employ diverse methods and materials in order to examine and challenge the ubiquity of photographic imagery. The high school students explored the concepts of the exhibition and reflected upon the role of photographic imagery in their everyday lives. The gallery visit and following visual art workshop were led by TCNJ Art Department adjunct faculty member and community artist, Michelle Nugent, and TCNJ students Alyssa Herrera, Brigid Barber, and Jazmine Ramirez.
TCNJ’s TrentonWorks Gallery is a space for community engaged learning and research and for the exhibition of socially engaged art related to the Trenton community. It is open Monday through Friday 9:30 to 1 p.m. and by appointment. Street parking is available in addition to a public lot across the street from the space.
