Since _______ Left.

Since __ Left is a commissioned group exhibition from the students of Photography II/Photography III. Questioning the nature of photography and its relationship to nostalgia, Since ___ Left is an open-ended personal exploration into how the photograph interprets or re-imagines the past. Given complete creative freedom, each student in the class will address this issue as either a personal remembrance (Since I/You/We Left) or as a collective experience (Since it was Left). Subthemes, such as the abandoned or abandonment, lost love and a reinvestigation of a personal past will culminate in an exhibition that confronts time and memory and our relationship to things once forgotten.

Building from a semester that challenged the visual interpretation of abstract thoughts, this exhibition both theatrically engages with the visual language of photography and explores the boundaries of personal expression. In eight short weeks the students of AAV 230 and AAV 330 developed the overall theme (phrase) Since __ Left and set out to make work that played with and challenged that phrase. Working through numerous critiques and inner reflection, each student came back with a uniquely individual interpretation and impressive body of work. As a whole, this is about photography and its relationship to the past, but individually it is about much more.
