Cuban Artist Geandy Pavón to Lecture at TCNJ, November 8

On Friday, November 8, at 11:30 a.m. Geandy Pavón will present Vanitas: The Political Still Life in conjunction with TCNJ Art Gallery exhibition Video Cubano, a project of The 8th Floor in New York City . The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be presented in Mayo Concert Hall in the Music Building.

Born in Cuba and educated at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas, Pavón currently lives in New Jersey. Among his recent works is the 2011 Nemesis Ai Weiwei, in which he projected the jailed Chinese artist’s portrait onto the side of New York’s Chinese Consulate. As he has explained, “For me the iconography produced by political history automatically becomes a vanitas, a still life. Politics translated into propaganda in the form of an image always ends up becoming a ruin. As an artist I am interested in this state of decay of the political image.” Pavón’s lecture will explore his politically charged art including his video work in the exhibition Video Cubano on view October 23 to December 15.
